Electric Heater Not Working? Troubleshoot It in 2 Simple Steps

Introduction

If an electric heater is not producing heat, start with two straightforward checks: confirm that the heater has a call for heat, then verify that the heating element has continuity. These tests narrow the issue down quickly and help determine whether the problem is incoming power or a failed element.

 

The Two Checks That Matter

Electric heater troubleshooting does not need to be complicated. A multimeter is all that is needed to answer two important questions:

  1. Is voltage reaching the heater when it should be heating?
  2. Is the heating element electrically intact?

Start with the live voltage test. Once power to the unit has been safely disconnected and the heater has cooled, move on to the continuity test.

 

Step 1: Confirm the Heater Has a Call for Heat

A call for heat means the heater is being commanded to operate and power is being supplied to the unit. The quickest way to verify this is to measure the voltage coming into the heater.

Using a multimeter set for the appropriate voltage measurement, test across the two incoming power leads, between the black and red wires. A voltage reading at these leads confirms that power is reaching the heater and that there is a call for heat.

If voltage is present but the heater still is not heating, the incoming-power check is complete. The next place to look is the heating element itself.

 

Step 2: Test the Heating Element for Continuity

Before opening the heater, make sure it is disconnected from power and cool to the touch. This is essential before accessing internal electrical components.

Remove the service access panels from both sides of the heater. Each panel is secured with four 1/4-inch screws. With the panels removed, the element connections on both ends of the heater are accessible.

Set the multimeter to continuity mode. Place one meter lead on the element connection at one side of the heater and the other lead on the connection at the opposite side. This tests whether there is a complete electrical path through the heating element.

How to Interpret the Result

  • Continuity is present: The element has a complete electrical path and is not identified as failed by this test.
  • No continuity: The heating element is bad and needs to be replaced.

 

A Simple Electric Heater Troubleshooting Workflow

When an electric heater is not working, follow this order:

  1. Measure voltage across the black and red incoming leads.
  2. If voltage is present, disconnect power and allow the heater to cool.
  3. Remove both service access panels by taking out the four 1/4-inch screws on each side.
  4. Test continuity across the heating element connections.
  5. Replace the element if the meter shows no continuity.

These two tests provide a fast, practical starting point for diagnosing an electric heater that is not producing heat. Confirm the call for heat first, then test the element. That simple sequence identifies whether the issue is power reaching the unit or the element that creates the heat.
